I love using flashcards to teach new words, but simply holding them up and eliciting the word would get boring fast...

Here are some things I do... I'd love to hear what other people are doing !

1. Pass the card:
Students sit in a circle and teacher passes a card to the next student, saying the word. The student passes the card to next student, again saying the word - and the card makes it's way around the circle with each student saying it loudly and clearly. Not too exciting yet.
BUT, when the card gets to the third or fourth student, I send a second card around in the same way and then a third etc...
Students start to get jumpy and excited as the cards have to be passed (and identified) fast - before the next card reaches them. Let the cards do a second rotation around the circle so the number of cards keeps increasing as each new card is added to the rotation. Stop when the excitement gets too much.

2. Twister:
Students take off shoes and sit on floor in a circle.
Cards are spread out in the center of the circle.
One or two students play twister - placing a hand on the first card you identify, then a foot on the next card called out, then another hand on the next card you choose, etc... As with twister, the hand or foot remains in place until the end, making students twist and bend to get to the cards.

3. What's missing? :
Three, four, five or more cards laid out on the floor. Students look at them for a few seconds, then close their eyes as one card is removed.
Students open eyes and identify which card is missing.

4. Flashcard Heads
If you have enough flashcards to have one per student - or in bigger classes, you can do this to review some of the words from previous months... Sit students in a circle and 'label' each student with a card - just like celebrity heads- I attach them to the student's school caps.
Students can see everyone's card except their own. Students stand in a circle and - going around the circle - they have one attempt to identify their card or perhaps a 2 or 3 second time limit. When a student guesses correctly they can sit down. Last one standing wins the boobie prize - make it fun and funny, not a penalty... Move the guesses quickly so students aren't waiting long...
